Canada’s opposition leaders have spoken out just moments after the federal Liberal government unveiled its annual budget plan. The so-called “generational” spending plan decided on by Prime Minister Mark Carney and his cabinet sets out an agenda of $141.4 billion in new spending offset by $51.7 billion in projected savings over the next five years, with the deficit projected at $78.3 billion this year. And for the most part, Carney’s decision to simultaneously run a sizeable deficit while slashing public service jobs, has not been received well. Conservative Party Leader Perre Poilievre wasted no time in marking his party’s position clear in the House of Commons, saying he “cannot support this costly Liberal budget,” and promising to put forward an amendment that will make Canada “affordable again.” Asked if she would vote no on the budget, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May responded, “Absolutely,” with Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet making comments suggesting he is on the same page. And while Don Davies expressed some issues with the budget, the NDP’s interim leader held a different tune, said that he’d like to review the document closely before discussing further with his caucus.
