In Night 17 of our Ramadan 1447 series “The Making of an Ummah,” we reflected on one of the most decisive moments in the history of Islam: the Battle of Badr, which took place on the 17th of Ramadan. After spending the previous nights examining the collapse of powerful civilizations mentioned in the Qur’an, tonight we turned to a very different story. The Qur’an draws our attention to a small group of believers who possessed almost none of the worldly strengths that those earlier nations had. Yet Allah granted them victory. Allah says: وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِبَدْرٍ وَأَنتُمْ أَذِلَّةٌ ۖ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ “Allah had already given you victory at Badr when you were weak. So have taqwa of Allah so that you may be grateful.” (Surah Aal ‘Imran 3:123) One of the remarkable lessons of Badr is that the believers did not even set out seeking a battle. They hoped to intercept a caravan, but Allah intended something far greater. وَإِذْ يَعِدُكُمُ اللَّهُ إِحْدَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ أَنَّهَا لَكُمْ وَتَوَدُّونَ أَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَاتِ الشَّوْكَةِ تَكُونُ لَكُمْ وَيُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَن يُحِقَّ الْحَقَّ بِكَلِمَاتِهِ وَيَقْطَعَ دَابِرَ الْكَافِرِينَ “You wished that the unarmed caravan would be yours, but Allah intended to establish the truth by His words and cut off the roots of the disbelievers.” (Surah al-Anfal 8:7) The Qur’an also highlights how Allah strengthened the believers with tranquility, unity, remembrance of Allah, and sincere reliance upon Him. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا لَقِيتُمْ فِئَةً فَاثْبُتُوا وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَا تَنَازَعُوا فَتَفْشَلُوا وَتَذْهَبَ رِيحُكُمْ “O believers, when you meet an opposing force, stand firm and remember Allah abundantly so that you may succeed. Obey Allah and His Messenger and do not dispute among yourselves, lest you lose courage and your strength depart.” (Surah al-Anfal 8:45–46) The believers called upon Allah with sincerity, and Allah promised to support them with angels. Yet the Qur’an reminds us that the victory ultimately belonged to Allah alone: فَلَمْ تَقْتُلُوهُمْ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ قَتَلَهُمْ وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ رَمَى “You did not kill them, but Allah killed them. And you did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw.” (Surah al-Anfal 8:17) Badr teaches the Ummah that victory does not come from numbers, wealth, or power, but from faith, unity, obedience to Allah, and sincere reliance upon Him. If three hundred believers could draw the help of Allah through their sincerity and sacrifice, the question for our time is: Can an Ummah of two billion Muslims produce even a few hundred believers with the qualities of those who stood at Badr? This night reminded us that the story of Badr is not merely history. It is a lesson for the Ummah today.
