NAIROBI October 11, 2011 Kenya's Semi-Arid community "The Turkana People". By Tom Maruko It's about a two day travel on road from Nairobi Kenyan Capital city Nairobi to Northern Kenya , say 726k away, you get the only lake in the sem-Arid having fresh water. There live the Turkana community who are pastoralist and face many problem one of them being, water. We found the community of the Turkana people making a water pan which will help the in the coming days to harvest water for their own use and animals as well. One of the committee member Mary Achuka says, due to the prolonged drought in the area from seven years not they decided to do this so that they cannot walk a long distances to fetch water. SOUND BYTE Mary Achuka "Some months ago we have been fetching water from a water pan which is 20km fair away from our homestead". The place is filled with rock and fine sand and cultivation is not applicable on relaying the rain water. World food program (WFP) has helped the community through food for asset, to get food and do the projects which can benefit the community such as like this. 60 years old James Akoroth say, when the draught came it flashed everything in the community even their children who went to grace cattle fare away from home, hence they died while in the field looking after their cattle. SOUND BYTE James Akoroth "During the draught everything went, all animals were killed by the draught, there was no water for them to drink and we were left with nothing" The donor community will visit the community on Wednesday and see how they can help them more.
