Jesus taught his disciples that they were the Salt of the Earth, the Light of the World, a City on a Hill. These are really amazing and profound statements, as most of the time his message and ministry pointed to his role as the Son of Man, the Son of God, and the Messiah. Indeed, we should focus primarily on Jesus: his words, his ministry, his sacrifice on the cross, and his resurrection. But once in a while, as Jesus put the spotlight on his disciples, so should we. • First, we will touch on the beatitudes, but put them in the context as Jesus said, "If salt loses its saltiness, what good is it, except to be trampled under foot?" Losing saltiness would look like the opposite of the beatitudes. We would be full of self, in no need of a Savior, loss of compassion, arrogant, self-reliant, having an appetite for unrighteousness, unmerciful, critical, impure in thought and heart, frictional, and celebrated for unrighteousness. These are not winning character traits that represent Jesus to the world. Fortunately, the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness to walk a godly life. • Second, we will examine Israel's role in the Old Testament. In keeping the Law, they were to display the wisdom and understanding of God and His nearness to HIs people. The Law actually displayed God's mercy and patience. This would be a light to the Gentiles, something different than the nations around them. The nation of Israel, following the Law of God, would be that City on a Hill, shining light to those around them. But they did not do that and were "trampled under foot" by multiple nations over the centuries. • Lastly, as Believers in Jesus and followers/disciples, we now have the opportunity to be that same light to those around us. In fact, the Apostle Peter says that WE are now the Chosen Generation, the Royal Priesthood, the Holy Nation, those Chosen by God, to display the wonders, the mercy, and the salvation available through Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul calls us Ambassadors for Christ, making our appeal to the people we meet, "Be reconciled to God". We can do this through the Holy Spirit who enables us to reach out and minister the Good News. Let us purpose to pursue Jesus and expect to be used as Salt, Light, a City on a Hill, Priests and Ambassadors, that point to Jesus Christ. ------ We hope you are challenged by this message; you can also watch or listen to this and other inspirational messages on your mobile devices by installing our free app ‘WORDSERVER’ for both Android and iOS mobile devices, which is available at Google’s ‘Play Store’ and Apple's ‘App Store’.
