The Purpose Statement: The purpose statement describes why an individual is conducting a study and what they hope to achieve (Locke et al., 2013). It sets the objectives, the intent, or the main idea of a proposal or a study. It should be clear, precise, and informative to prevent readers from getting lost while reading the text. In journal articles, the purpose statement is written into introductions as the final statement; in theses and dissertations, it’s often a separate section. Quantitative Purpose Statements: Quantitative purpose statements differ from qualitative statements in terms of the language, and a focus on relating or comparing variables or constructs. They indicate the purpose of the study; its theory, model, or framework; the variables, participants, research site, and strategy of inquiry involved; as well as the definition of key variables. Research Questions and Hypothesis: These narrow down the purpose statement to predictions about what will be discovered or what questions will be addressed in the study. Quantitative research questions are queries about the relationship/s among variables that the researcher aims to uncover. These are frequently used in social science research and especially in survey studies. Quantitative hypotheses are predictions the researcher makes about the outcomes of relationships among variables. They are numeric estimates of population values based on the data gathered from samples. Testing a hypothesis utilizes statistical procedures wherein the researcher draws conclusions about the population from a study sample.
