Discover the history of Minnesota's state flag with Gray McCoy from FlagandBanner.com Minnesota State Flag: Facts and History Minnesota has a fascinating flag history, having just adopted a completely new design in 2024 after over a century with its previous versions. Current Flag (2024-Present) Minnesota adopted its current state flag on May 11, 2024, featuring a modern, simplified design with deep symbolism: Design Elements: •A dark blue section shaped like Minnesota's state outline containing a white eight-pointed star, with the remainder in light blue •The eight-pointed star represents the North Star, reflecting the state motto "L'Étoile du Nord" (The Star of the North) •The star design mirrors an octagram on the Minnesota State Capitol rotunda floor •Dark blue symbolizes the night sky and land, while light blue represents Minnesota's abundant waters •The star's points create an illusion of four letter Ms when viewed from certain angles Historical Flags •Original Flag (1893): The first flag was designed by Amelia Hyde Center and featured a white field on one side with the state seal, the state name, and 19 gold stars representing Minnesota as the 19th state after the original 13; the reverse was plain blue. This ornate design was beautifully embroidered by sisters Pauline and Thomane Fjelde but proved too complex for mass production. •1957 Redesign: For Minnesota's centennial, the flag was simplified to feature a blue background on both sides with the central design from the 1893 flag appearing in circular form. •1983 Modification: The state seal was modified to avoid suggesting that civilization's advance required the departure of Indigenous inhabitants. The Indigenous figure on horseback was repositioned to face more toward the farmer rather than riding away. •Why the Change? The 2024 redesign addressed two main concerns: the offensive imagery showing a White settler while an Indigenous person rides away, which many found promoted erasure of Native peoples, and poor flag design that violated principles of good vexillology. The old flag was actually ranked among the ten worst flag designs in North America by the vexillological community due to its complexity and excessive symbolism. The State Emblems Redesign Commission, established in 2023, selected the new design after reviewing public submissions, with the winning design created by 24-year-old Andrew Prekker becoming official on Minnesota's statehood anniversary.
