Hi! Not my usual Christmas video this year, but still, some geeky synth goodness! Today we're having a look at an interesting pairing: a 5x5 Pluck'n'Duck VCA matrix mixer and NYX, a small screenless livecoding platform. The Matrix Mixer is quite a classic: 5x5 audio matrix, plus a VCA for each node in the matrix, thus making it a VCA matrix. Featuring multiple inputs and outputs; minijacks, 1/4" jacks and banana connectors, compatible with any line-level device, guitar pedals, Eurorack modular synths, Buchla, Serge, Bugbrand. It can seamlessly mix audio and CVs, up to 15Vpk without distortion. NYX is a little experiment in livecoding and language design. The prototype is currently running on an Arduino Micro; 32k of program memory, 2.5kb of sram and 1kb of EEPROM storage. I wanted to try and work within those tight constrains, both as an exercise in minimalism and a general good practice in using just the bare minimum hardware required for a task. The language is called Raven, and is designed to be typed without a screen. Thus it uses very short opcodes (usually 2 characters) and a functional-reactive paradigm, static typed, with immutable data structures. The result is a form of dataflow livecoding environment, where you can basically program "patches" on the fly. It is still in a very much early stage, I wanted to build a little working demo, to get a gist of how it feels. Oh, NYX was originally just an experiment to recycle my old PS2 keyboard, then it evolved into this :). In its next stages it will also support regular usb keyboards. Without a screen, the performer is forced to focus on sound and performance. The interaction between the voodoo-laden analog world with the precision and repeatability of the digital realm is quite interesting, new ways to harness chaos. I make units on demand, and I am open to customization. You need a 100x100 matrix with 74 extra sub-mixes, an embedded cross-over and an envelope follower to pilot your eurorack system? I can do it. Just ask :) All my mixers are ACTIVE! Buffered and available with gains up to 10x (+20dB) without distortion, AC or DC-coupled.
