Mid of Mladic poster on a pillar STORYLINE Residents in the Bosnian towns of Banja Luka and Pale on Thursday reacted negatively to the news of the arrest of Bosnian Serb former general Ratko Mladic. Mladic, the top Bosnian Serb general during the 1992-95 Bosnian war, was captured in Serbia early on Thursday after over 16 years on the run. He is accused of genocide and other war crimes, including masterminding the massacre of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica in 1995. In Pale, a former Bosnian Serb stronghold near Sarajevo, where Mladic once issued orders, hundreds of people rode around town in their cars beeping their horns and waving large Serbian flags. Residents in the town of Banja Luka spoke out against Mladic's arrest. One man said he was grateful for Mladic's actions and that it was unfair that he was arrested. "We think he was a great Serb. He did a lot for the Serbian people. This injustice hurts because the tradition that only Serbs are arrested continues," he said, referring to what Serbs see as the Hague war crime court's bias against Serbia. Another said he felt saddened by the arrest, calling Mladic "the only Serb hero who fought for our Republic." Meanwhile, in the Serbian capital Belgrade there was tight security late on Thursday, and although some people had gathered the atmosphere appeared calm.
