Join me on Patreon! / unclebearklein “Beauty all around in a suffering world” is how I shorthand the complexity of being alive. Lately, I’ve been feeling engulfed by the suffering part of this saying, and struggling to witness and hold onto the beauty part. This feels especially true as Minneapolis and many other cities in the U.S. continue to resist butality directed at them by an administration choosing dehumanization at every turn. In the global context, the suffering experienced by the human and more-than-human world is breathtaking. It’s not surprising that it’s difficult right now to find beauty, to create, or not fall fully into despair. *** I seem wired to behold life’s riotous beauty. Since I was a cub, finding beauty and awe have been regular features of my life. It’s one of my most cherished gifts, and I don’t care if it’s nature or nurture. I am humbly and so profoundly grateful for this capacity. And lately...it’s been difficult. *** The moments have been fleeting, and there’s been way too much space between. At these times I often turn back to my love of photography and wee film-making. I know that if I go noodling around in the Photos on my iPhone, I’ll find evidence of beauty...glimpses of poignancy and heart-swell moments my past self was wise enough to document. During these times of witnessing so much pain and dysregulation (and experiencing these states ourselves), I offer you a few minutes of beauty. *** I invite you to find a quieter space, take a deep breath, let out a long...even longer sigh, and watch my wee UBR film: Sunset To Kentucky The footage is from the Autumn of 2024, when Miss Nicole and I drove from Puffy Bay, stopped off in Bloomington Normal for a quick visit with her beloved parents, and then made the trip to her home in Diputanta, Kentucky. It’s a meditation on a cartrip sunset. It’s a glimpse into a stunning slice of rural Kentucky. It’s a sip of numinous beauty. I’m so grateful to my past and present selves, because somehow they found the beauty waiting in our suffering world. I just had to go look for it. *** Beloveds, now, in these times of overwhelm and turmoil, we need beauty. I invite you to find it. It’s there, we just need to look. ✨❤️🔥✨ We do this thing together.
