Cultural Humility: Hidden Dangers of Overcorrection

Welcome to A Psychologist Talks! Oooo, another potentially controversial episode! Or at least the title might sound like it. But SURELY people don't react to titles alone, right? They sit down and listen to these things start to finish, right? ...uh oh. Anyway, in today's episode, I talk about the importance of cultural humility AND the simultaneous dangers of overcorrection that I have observed as the field of psychology has moved to embrace this important endeavor. Specifically, we inadvertently surrender our role as curious observer, ironically becoming LESS capable of understanding our clients and helping them navigate their challenges. Key Quote: "Welcome to the dialectics of the world. This is why we struggle as a society: dialectical space is hard to hold. But, by golly, we as providers in this profession need to lead the charge. We need to lead the charge and model that there is a way to [both be humble and be willing to confront/challenge]."
