In this episode, I step into the Nanjing Museum, one of China's three greatest museums. From prehistoric dinosaur skeletons to Han dynasty jade burial suits, from the Seven Sages brick painting to Ming and Qing imperial treasures—six millennia of Chinese civilization unfold before my eyes. Then I walk into the Presidential Palace. Once the residence of a Ming prince, then the viceroy's office of the Qing dynasty, later the palace of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and finally the seat of the Republic of China government. One compound holds half of modern Chinese history. Sun Yat-sen was inaugurated here as Provisional President. In 1949, the red flag was raised over its gate. Walking through its halls and gardens, every step lands on a layer of history. Conversing with antiquity in the morning, stepping into the modern era in the afternoon. In just one day, Nanjing revealed to me the depth of China.
