Russian ambassador to Turkey shot dead in Ankara

The Russian ambassador to Turkey has been shot dead by an off-duty police officer at an art gallery in Ankara. TV pictures showed the ambassador, Andrey Karlov, giving a speech when the gunman, wearing a suit and tie, opened fire from behind him,... shouting a message about the Syrian city of Aleppo. The gunman, identified as 22-year-old Mevlut Mert Altintas, has been killed. Russian President Vladimir Putin says the murder is a provocation aimed at undermining Russia-Turkey ties and the peace process in Syria. Russia has been instrumental in helping the Assad regime in its successful push to retake eastern Aleppo from rebels. Turkey has been supporting the Sunni Muslim groups fighting against the Syrian government. World leaders have condemned the killing. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States stands ready to offer assistance to Russia and Turkey.
