Léa, Marie-José, Noëlle, Monique and Simone were born to Congolese mothers and European fathers during the colonial Belgian rule. As was the rule at the time they were taken from their mother and placed in religious institutions, because they were seen as a threat by the Belgian state which feared they could rise up against the colonial order.
