In the early morning hours of June 9th, 1979, the early birds and night owls of America tuned into the Mutual Radio Network to listen to the last of Larry King's special series of shows recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. Instead of the usual snore-fest discussions of politics and hot-button issues of the day, this program was special, as Larry's final guests for that week was none other than musician and historian Doug Green and his band: a three-piece acoustic Western/Folk/Swing band that had quickly become a hidden gem in Music City in the two years since their formation. During this appearance, the Riders perform "Bound To Hit The Trail", "Back In The Saddle Again", "Blue Shadows On The Trail", "After You've Gone", "When Payday Rolls Around", and "Happy Trails". For you hardcore Saddle Pals out there, there's a lot to unpack in these here 23 minutes: The Riders introduce themselves with what would later become the "Riders Radio Theater" harmonic coyote howl. Larry keeps calling them "Doug Green and The Riders In The Sky", something that those of you who listened to 1978 interview with Vernell Hackett will know that Doug absolutely hated. Speaking of hated names, notice that Woody and Slim are still calling Doug "Big Fella" when they are performing, as he had yet to christen himself "Ranger Doug" (which he would eventually do before the band signed to Rounder Records a few months later). #ridersinthesky #acousticmusic #cowboymusic #westernmusic #countrymusic #larryking
