The Australian soprano Marie Collier was the first of the performers to make their fame mainly with a 'publicity machine'. From her operatic stage debut (Santuzza with the National Theatre Opera company in Melbourne in March 1952) she was proclaimed a 'star'. Indeed, she was an electric personality on stage and audiences adored her but her vocal shortcomings, lack of command of foreign languages and problems in her personal life, brought her career to a rapid close - literally a short time before her early death at the age of forty-four. She is probably best known as being the substitute Tosca in Covent Garden's famous 1965 revival of the Zeffirelli production of the opera. When Maria Callas cancelled her appearances in three out of the four scheduled performances, Collier stepped in, to great acclaim. In 1967, she created the role of Christine Mannon in the world premiere of Marvin David Levy's MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA at the Metropolitan Opera. Her other roles with the Met included Musetta, Tosca (on tour to Cleveland, Ohio), and Santuzza. We hear her in the title role of Puccini's MANON LESCAUT with the Hungarian tenor Róbert Ilosfalvy as Des Grieux. Manon's brother, Lescaut, is performed by Robert Massard and Geronte by Forbes Robinson. The cameo role of The Singer is sung by Elizabeth Shelley and István Kertész leads the The Royal Opera House Covent Garden Orchestra in this broadcast performance from November 27th 1968.
