This Halloween, I dusted off my Armorer kit made by 501st member Bret Fisher and flew to Sioux Falls, the home base for Voices Against Cancer. I’d promised Spencer Thorsland, a very special foundling who has been battling cancer, that 'The Armorer’ would try to trick-or-treat with him in his new custom-designed Mandalorian cosplay if he was home from treatment in Minnesota. Rob Keisacker (VAC’s selfless and enthusiastic Treasurer), Lou George (VAC’s tireless and passionate President), PT Dan (the Physical Therapist and cheerleader for kids going through cancer treatment) and I made a plan to surprise kids at the Children’s Hospital as well, and we planned to trick-or-treat with some of VAC’s Honored Kids that evening. The news that ‘The Armorer’ would indeed be coming to town gave Spencer the extra pep he needed to regain enough energy to make it home. Unfortunately he wouldn’t have the energy to go outside in costume, so we arranged a home visit. Aaaaand the day got underway! There were a lot of surprised and delighted Star Wars fans young and old at the hospital. I visited a leukemia patient who had been at the hospital since I’d last visited in July, but Halloween was his last day and he was ready to go home. When I opened the door to his room, he was ready, waiting with an unexpected surprise for me (as you’ll see). Each time I seen PT Dan in action, his enthusiasm and genuine rapport with each and every kiddo and parent inspire me He was our wise and attentive guide, letting us know when it was appropriate to make a grand entrance and when we needed to slip in quietly—I even broke with tradition and removed my helmet so as not to frighten a few kids. Next we drove out to Spencer’s house. The way he greeted me put a huge smile on my face (since you can’t see under the helmet, you’ll have to trust me on this one). He was excited to show me his Mando armor, which he designed himself. I challenge anyone to prove they have more Grogu toys than Spencer does—take a look! The evening temps were promising to be in the 20s F, so it was decided that we’d welcome the kiddos to an indoor event instead of parading around with hands too numb to accept tricks OR treats. I suited up with the 621st Detention Squad and we felt like WE were the little kids as we giggled in our Star Wars getup. One trooper had missed the memo that I was the actual Armorer and thought for most of the evening that his squad had gained a cosplayer who had been studying my voice until she could get it down cold (he was later roasted by the rest of the garrison). Voices Against Cancer is an initiative that I’m grateful to be a part of. They raise funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer, with an emphasis towards researching treatments that aren’t debilitating for young, developing bodies . They host an annual convention featuring actors, voice actors and artists each year, but what has really motivated me to be involved is the community they cultivate. No family should have to go through the difficulties of cancer alone, and VAC provides a safe and supportive place for families to find financial and emotional support. If you’d like to get involved, go to www.voicesagainstcancer.org or visit me when we’re at a convention together - I always raffle off an autographed item and all the proceeds go to the kids of VAC. ______ Thank you so much for watching my channel!
