Years ago, I read a Saveur Magazine article on Mutton BBQ at Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn in Owensboro, KY. Something was enchanting about this specific style of Kentucky BBQ, a highly regional tradition of using mature sheep in barbecue. I chalked it off as a food pilgrimage I could hopefully one day take, along with stuff like boiled crawfish in rural Louisiana and Smoked Sausage at Kreuz Market in Texas. Recently I was flying down to explore the Mississippi Delta and found myself two hours outside Owensboro. I decided to drive to this Western Kentucky town known for lamb BBQ and bluegrass and it was exactly what I hoped for. Watergate salad, chopped Mutton with dip (their version of bbq sauce) and a family member of Moonlite BBQ even showed me around. When people ask, “What is American food?” it’s places like this that stand out to me. I still make a short list of special places to visit for food in America. Sometimes it takes me a couple of days to go, sometimes a decade. I often worry a place will change before I get to go, I’m happy the Owensboro I once read about was waiting for me.
