Paul Calandra, the Prime Minister's parliamentary secretary, had just responded to a question from NDP Leader Tom Mulcair. That was out of sync with Stephen Harper's approach of late, which is to respond to each and every one of the NDP leader's queries. Mulcair made him pay, and employed a dose of unparliamentary language in the process. "Of course, it is the time of year, Mr. Speaker, when we give our children and grandchildren advent Calandras, but we have real questions that are only for the Prime Minister," he chirped. Speaker Andrew Scheer admonished Mulcair for referring to a Member of Parliament by name, but the jab had the desired effect. When Mulcair finished his question, which was about the reappearance of emails belonging to former PMO legal adviser Ben Perrin, Harper stood to respond. Harper's response addressed Mulcair's previous question about a pair of New Brunswick senators whose living expenses have recently come under scrutiny, which Calandra had attempted to answer. And then he took on the question about Perrin's emails. The PM took Mulcair's bait, and the NDP leader knew it as soon as he saw Harper pop out of his seat. Witness that broad smile. Mulcair's having a ball in Question Period, as he grinds away at the PM's patience.
