Both Tibetans and Mongolians follow the tantric school of Buddhism, which recognizes the Dalai Lama as a high spiritual authority. The Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India, has visited Mongolia five times, most recently in 1995. VOICE OVER 0000 UPSOUND 0004 Horns blew, cymbals clanged and drums beat as the leader of Tibetan Buddhism arrived at Mongolia's largest monastery. 0011 The Dalai Lama wearing his traditional robe with one arm bare to the chill wind, made his way through the Monastery in the Mongolian capital as Temperatures fell to minus 5 degrees Fahrenheit . 0022 Hundreds of Mongolians jostled and held up cameras in hopes of a glimpse of the Dalai Lama as he made his way to a private meeting in the monastery. 0031 UPSOUND 0033 "When the Dalai Lama was walking, he pulled my beard two or three times" says this monk. "What could be better than that? It was great, making my visit here a success." 0045 But the visit has provoked any angry response from Beijing. 0049 China regards the Dalai Lama as a political schemer bent on ending Chinese rule in Tibet. 0054 UPSOUND (Mandarin) Kong Quan, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson 0057 "We oppose the Dalai Lama carrying out separatist activities outside of China using religion as a cover," says the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman. "We ask Mongolia and other countries not to provide such a forum for him." 0112 Later in the day, the Dalai Lama gave a lesson to thousands in front of one of the main temples on the monastery compound. 0119 Mongolia shares strong religious ties to Tibet . Some ninety percent of Mongolia's population consider themselves Buddhist. 0127 VISION ENDS Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
