BARRYS SCHOOL OF BEATS is once again in session and in this special 3 part edition Hip-Hops most elusive Beatmaking enigma Barry Beats takes us behind the beat on a seriously ambitious and complex instrumental offering entitled “You're the one” • BARRYS BEAT LIBRARY:You're the one/Old Kan... https://barrybeatsakasispex.bandcamp.... EPISODE 3 In the 3rd and final instalment Barry sticks everything into Ableton for an intensive musical workout, layering up the sampled music in an attempt to give this track a truly epic sound. First up the most crucial layering element, The Baseline. With this track Barry attempts to replicate and therefore enhance the original bass playing from the sample. We learn a nice little analysis trick but the fact remains, a fluid and funky baseline takes time and as Barry is not a trained keyboard player its just a case on 1 bar at a time! Oh and if you want to grab the bass guitar sample Barry used in this track here it is. Its called Xmas Bass and its totally free! http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtop... Big up to Gregjazz for the sample library. With the Baseline in the bag, now for the real hard work. Barry tried in vain to get one of his Keyboard playing buddies over to work out and replay the chords and melodies from the musical sample. In the end Barry decided to undertake the mission himself with the not so able assistance of midi note extraction. As you will hear from the example Barry gives, the note extraction only gets about 80% good notes. The remaining rouge, or Les Dawson, notes need to be discarded and a fair bit of extra editing is required in order to achieve a smooth accurate recreation. In Barrys case, a few days of editing!!! With the midi note information sounding good Barry then gets carried away adding a few more virtual instrument layers to the mix. A Harpsichord, Leslie cabinet effected Fender Rhodes and strings combine with the piano to create a rich aural tapestry that drapes the original Sample, giving both depth and added musical variety. With the layering complete Barry heads back to familiar ground and stems everything back into Protools for a quick mix. Barry doesn’t consider himself a particularly masterful mixer so doesn’t go into a great deal of detail about the mixing process suffice to say mixing is made a lot easier with the intense multi layering that was undertook in this track. 30 tracks to be precise! We also get to see a bit of parallel (New York) compression in action! So that is about it for this Barrys school of Beats. Unlike the previous Flea Bite episode this one has required a lot more explanation due to the complex nature of its composition. I hope its not bored the socks off you and you have enjoyed seeing the many processes that went into this particular Barry Beat. There should be another one along pretty soon so stay tuned and remember to subscribe and sign up for notifications. Oh and here are all the social media links for Barry.
