China Warrior/The Kung Fu (Turbografx-16) - Full Playthrough

Full Playthrough/Gameplay of "China Warrior"/"The Kung Fu" on the PC Engine/Turbografx-16. "China Warrior", known in its home country as “The Kung Fu”, is a horizontal-scrolling beat'em up created by Hudson Soft, which was originally released for the japanese PC Engine in 1987, and came out in North America in 1989. This game is noticeably inspired by “Kung Fu”/“Spartan X” for the NES, but it differs from that one mainly for the size of the sprites and for the automatic and unidirectional scrolling of the screen. In Japan, "The Kung Fu" received a positive reception, also because the size of the characters showed the technical superiority of the PC Engine over the Famicom, but in the West "China Warrior" is largely considered one of the worst titles on the console. Actually, though, more than because of a genuine lack of quality, probably "China Warrior" gets criticized for the extreme simplicity of its mechanics and its high level of difficulty. Once you figure out that the key to compensate the controls’ stiffness and advance through the game lies in the memorization of the obstacles, this game can provide an enjoyable and addicting experience. The only exception consists in the boss battles, which don’t necessarily present specific patterns, tending to turn into chaotic button-mashing sessions. "China Warrior" doesn't give you any continues, but you can get an extra life every time you reach a certain score. You can also recover the protagonist’s health with dedicated items, but in order to do so you need to hit them, because just touching won't work. As regards the technical aspects, "China Warrior" is kind of a mixed bag: the characters’ animations are stiff and the backgrounds of some stages are bare-bones, but the sprites of the characters show off a remarkable care for the details, and the game overall displays a good use of colour. The soundtrack, although very limited, contains pretty decent themes, especially the main one. Overall, then, in its simplicity "China Warrior" is a game that doesn’t deserve at all its bad reputation, and, if approached with an open mind, it might get your appreciation as well. Starting from 2007, the game has been digitally re-released on the Nintendo Virtual Console, and in 2020 "The Kung Fu" was included on the PC Engine/Turbografx Mini Console's library.
