AIDS & the Black Community | Folks (1987)

This episode of the series “Folks” from March 1, 1987, focuses on health concerns in the black community. Rob Hinton reports on a recent symposium on AIDS in the black community. It includes highlights of a speech given by AIDS patient Frederick Garnett. Sonya Masingale then leads a panel discussion with two physicians, Dr. Victor Jackson and Dr. Luther Stewart. They discuss: the risk factors for AIDS; the mortality rate; the high rate of AIDS in the black community; the symptoms; prevention; their recommendation for screenings; the high rate of heart disease in the black community; and how to change diet and exercise habits in order to prevent heart disease.
