From 5 PM on February 3 to late night on February 4, the Mumbai to Pune stretch was totally blocked, creating a 22-kilometre-long traffic jam. Thousands of vehicles were stuck, leaving nearly 1.25 lakh people, including women, children, and the elderly, stranded on a highway meant for high-speed travel. The situation arose after a gas tanker carrying highly inflammable propylene gas met with an accident and began leaking, where even a small spark could have caused a major disaster. Despite the presence of NDRF, SDRF, highway police, fire brigade, and gas company teams, questions remain over why it took more than 32 hours to control the leak and clear the tanker.
