The 1986 cult classic Spookies is an extremely entertaining horror film, boasting fantastic special effects, wonderfully moody atmosphere, and a great score. However, it has one very unfortunate flaw: it's obviously two unrelated movies cut together into one, and the two halves just don't quite fit together. Spookies began its life as a totally different horror film, called Twisted Souls. Then after the film was shot, the producer had a disagreement with the original filmmakers, writer/directors Brendan Faulkner and Thomas Doran and writer/producer Frank Farel, and halted post-production work on the film before it was finished, effectively killing the project as the filmmakers envisioned it. Later, the producer decided to complete the film after all – their way, without the involvement of the original filmmakers – and hired a totally unrelated cast and crew to film additional scenes. And thus Spookies was born: about 2/3 footage from what was supposed to be Twisted Souls, and 1/3 new footage that obviously belongs to a different production. This rather clumsy re-edit totally changed the story of the film as well: Twisted Souls was supposed to be about a group of twentysomethings who accidentally release a bunch of demons from a Ouija board, but Spookies is about an evil wizard who sends a bunch of monsters to kill the twentysomethings so he can resurrect his dead bride... or something like that. Not surprisingly, given the circumstances, it never quite gels into a coherent plot. The resulting film is still a lot of fun, in its insane, disjointed way, but it's obvious that the original Twisted Souls would have been way better. Fans like myself have always hoped that a restored Twisted Souls director's cut would someday be released (which is theoretically possible, since the film did finish shooting, and it was only post-production that was unfinished when it met its tragic end), but right now that looks very unlikely, if not impossible.. So I decided to do the next best thing: remove all the added Spookies footage and re-build the Twisted Souls version of the film as faithfully as possible, using the footage that survived in the final cut. For the most part, all this entailed was just cutting out the Spookies scenes, and letting the Twisted Souls scenes tell their own story. With the extra footage and plotlines gone, the original plot came through immediately- and actually made a lot more sense than the Spookies version. The one part where I did have to use a bit of creative editing was at the end, where the Twisted Souls footage just stops, and Spookies goes on its own strange tangent before the closing credits. Fortunately, someone who was involved with the film described the original ending on IMDb: “two of the three characters un-age, the girl in blue doesn't because of her previous wound by the grim reaper. The three all escape the house, which starts to go up in glow of white light - melting all the tombstones and sucking in the flying ghosts who were keeping everyone trapped in the house. There were no zombies, just flying ghosts. the explanation of what the corpse may be holding, was cut out of the earlier scenes in the film. After the house and ghost vanish in a storm of supernatural force, two of the characters remain alive as the sun comes up.” -IMDb user talkpingp1 Using this as an outline, I found footage from the rest of the film which I could piece together to approximately re-create this ending sequence. The zombies still have to fill in for the ghosts, and since there is no footage of the house being destroyed, I used the gravestone being struck by lightning and exploding instead. Since the only footage I could use to show Peter and Meegan escaping the house also had Linda in it, all three of them get to survive in this approximated ending. Still, I hope that the ending is a bit closer to how Twisted Souls should have concluded, and I hope that this re-cut can provide a better appreciation of how good Twisted Souls may have been. **I must stress that the ending is just my recreation of what the actual ending may have been like- it does not reflect any actual footage that they shot, and it does make use of the zombie footage shot for the Spookies version, not Twisted Souls. I only attached that ending to give some sense of narrative closure to this cut. No copyright infringement is intended by this fan-edit; it was made solely for the not-for-profit enjoyment of fans, no money will ever be made off of it, and I will not distribute any physical copies. If the actual director's cut of Twisted Souls ever gets released (come on, Scream Factory...), I'll take this down. If you happen to find this and you worked on Twisted Souls, I hope you don't mind that I made this fan-edit, and I would be interested in hearing your feedback about it.
