As Syria’s islamist insurgency continues to falter, the Russian Air Force contingent in the country has launched a series of precision strikes on targets belonging to Jabhat Al Nusra - an Al Qaeda affiliated militant group which has alongside the Islamic State been one of the two primary threats to the government of Syria, ruling over vast swathes of Syrian territory for over half a decade. Strikes were reportedly launched by Russia’s elite Su-34 Hellduck twin engine heavy fighters, cutting edge platforms which entered service in 2014 as one of the world’s foremost dedicated strike jets. The Su-34 is capable of carrying a wide variety of highly precise munitions, and can use these to engage adversaries at both standoff and short ranges depending on the nature of the adversary. Elaborating on the strikes, Russian Defence Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov referred to “high precision munitions” being used against terrorist targets, stressing that the attack were launched “solely on the identified terrorist objects located far from settlements.” This came amid unverified reports from Western sources that Russian airstrikes on Islamist targets had caused considerable collateral damage and civilian casualties in the past. While the exact type of munitions used remans unclear, the Syrian theatre has often proven an ideal testing ground for new weapons systems and munitions for the Russian military - with the Kh-38, Kh-65 and Kh-101 being among the advanced new weapons systems which made their debut in the Syrian conflict alongside the Su-34 strike fighter itself. With militants deploying a wide variety of surface to air missiles, primarily handheld MANPADS similar to those provided to Mujahedeen jihadists in Afghanistan by the Western Bloc to fight the Soviet Union, the Hellducks’ high altitude and advanced Khibiny, SAP-14 and SAP-518 electronic countermeasures systems made the strike fighters ideal for strikes on Idlib - leaving them all but invulnerable to missile attacks. One of the targets impacted was reportedly a drone factory, which may have been used to manufacture basic unmanned attack vehicles used to harass Russian military bases in Syria, and other key infrastructure sustaining the jihadists’ war effort is likely to be targeted in the opening stages before a major ground offensive takes place. The Russian Air Force, with advanced strike capabilities well beyond those of its Syrian allies, provides invaluable assistance in weakening the defences of the Al Nusra front and other Islamist groups in Idlib before the main offensive begins. Eight of the Russian Air Force's Su-34 strike fighters have been deployed to Syria, and are likely to be involved in carrying out further strikes alongside older Su-24 strike fighters and multirole aircraft such as the Su-30 and MiG-29SMT, and even the relatively small contingent of around two dozen of these aircraft is enough to be a major game changer which will make the looming Idlib offensive, likely the final major battle of the Syrian conflict, considerably less difficult for Russian and Syrian forces on the ground. ======================================================================================== #lastbattle #su35 #syria #su57m #su25 #b52h #b1b #s200 #s33 #mig25pd #b57 #b61 #mig31 #su27 #mig29 #s300s #f117 #f22 #c130 #b52 #c17 #b1 #mig21 #bf109 #concorde #p51 #boeing707 #f35 #sr71 #c5 #dc3 #boeing787 #c69 #u2 #f15 #phenom100 #pc12 #29 #jet #f14 #j10c #tomcat #firebird #jf17 #f16 #su30mki #mig35 #b21 #paf #iaf #Pakistan #india #china #iran #turkey #america #asia #northamerica #southamerica #australia #europe #antarctica #africa
