Vollebregt must have been a very enterprising man indeed to begin a new career at the age of 54. He learned the trade of organ-building between 1840 and 1845 at the established firms of Lohman, Bätz and Naber. He learned important aspects of organ-building from all three and used the combined knowledge to form his own style of building. The Vollebregts were soon very much in demand; in the space of thirty years they supplied over 35 new instruments for churches in North Brabant, Utrecht, Zeeland and North-and South Holland. The organ in the St. Servatius Church in Erp was inaugurated on the 6th of August, 1848. Ten years later the Vollebregts extended this organ's possibilities by adding a free pedal and a Cornet-stop. In 1910 the organ-builder Franssen from Roermond also made some radical changes, introducing eleven new organ stops. The beautiful Vollebregt organ was restored in 1984/85 by the organ-builder Vermeulen from Weert. Ad van Sleuwen studied piano with Gerard van Bierk, theory of music with Jan van Dijk and organ with Hub. Houët at the Brabants Conservatory in Tilburg. He rounded off these studies by obtaining a soloist's diploma for organ. He took part in masterclasses given by Ewald Kooiman, Luigi Taglaivini and Ton Koopman. Ad van Sleuwen has been teaching music theory at the Brabants Conservatory since 1975. He has published works on organ history in conjunction with organ-expert Frans Jespers. He has made LP/CD recordings on the organs in the St. John's Church in Kaatsheuvel (Vollebregt 1855), the St. Peter's Church in Hilvarenbeek (Van Hirtum 1840) and the Basilica in Oudenbosch (König 1773). He also records for the radio and gives concerts in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Denmark.
