“Turn Down to Go Up” | Pastor Brandon O. McAfee | February 20, 2026

Some mountains don’t move with a quick prayer. Some battles are stubborn. Some chains have been wrapped around us for years. And Jesus gives us the strategy in the text: “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” In other words, when you face a big mountain, you may need a deeper consecration. That’s why Lent matters. Lent is spiritual “turn down” season. Turn down isn’t punishment—it’s positioning. It’s choosing to quiet your flesh so you can hear the Spirit. It’s denying your appetite so your anointing can increase. It’s stepping away from distractions so deliverance has room to operate. Turning down might mean fasting food. It might mean fasting social media. It might mean fasting gossip, alcohol, toxic conversations, reckless spending, or late-night scrolling. The point is not “religious suffering.” The point is spiritual sensitivity. Because some breakthroughs require a focused life. And here’s the shout: we can turn down, because Jesus turned down for us. He turned down Heaven to come to Earth. He turned down comfort to carry a cross. He turned down His will in the garden for the Father’s will. And because He did, we now have access to power that can move mountains and break chains. Application: Choose one “turn down” for the next 24 hours. Replace it with prayer time. If you fast a meal, use that time to pray for your healing, your household, your church, and your community. If you fast social media, fill the silence with Scripture (Matthew 17, Psalm 121, Isaiah 40). Watch what God does with a surrendered day. Prayer: Lord, in this Lenten season, teach me to turn down what feeds my flesh and turn up what feeds my faith. Give me discipline, desire, and spiritual focus. Break stubborn strongholds and move heavy mountains through prayer and fasting.
