In an important development, the WAQF board has asserted ownership of 7 villages with a predominance of Hindu residents. In contrast, the villagers have refuted the Board's assertions and presented the documentation proving their ownership. The Supreme Court may hear the appeal regarding the special status granted to the WAQF in 1995 in the interim. The WAQF Act's different sections are described by Vishnu Jain as follows: "Under Section 54 of the WAQF Act, the WAQF Board can declare anyone as an encroacher of the property, and the members of the WAQF Board are treated as public servants." He has also offered the Center an amendment as a proposal to address the entire issue.
