After a period of vast expansion by early 1943, the United States launched a two-pronged offensive to roll back the Japanese Empire. The US Navy adopted an "island-hopping" strategy across the Central Pacific, culminating in the decisive Battle of the Philippine Sea, which crippled Japan's naval air power. Meanwhile, General MacArthur led a bloody campaign to retake the Philippines, which included the costly Battle of Leyte Gulf and the horrific urban combat to recapture Manila. Concurrently, a separate and equally difficult Allied campaign to clear Japanese forces from Burma successfully reopened vital supply lines to China. These campaigns, while successful, highlighted the fanatical Japanese resistance and terrible Allied losses, leaving military planners desperate to avoid a direct invasion of the Japanese homeland.
