(13 May 1998) English/Nat Greenpeace campaigners have unfurled a giant banner from the top of Nelson's Column in London's Trafalgar Square in a protest aimed at saving Canadian forests. The three-man team climbed the landmark monument in the early hours of Wednesday in an action timed to coincide with a visit by Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien. The Greenpeace protesters took one and a half hours to unfurl the banner from the top of Nelson's Column in the heart of London. The bright yellow banner which dominated the landscape read "God save Canada's Rainforest" and was placed strategically opposite Canada House, which was being by Britain's Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Chretien. Canada House, designed in 1824 by Sir Robert Smirke, architect of the British Museum, has been completely refurbished. No efforts were being made by the police to get the climbers down from the monument. A police spokeswoman said: "They are all experienced climbers and I am told they have food and water and they say they are perfectly okay. I don't intend to put anyone else in danger by sending them up to the top." But she added: "Although they will not be arrested when they eventually come down, they will be reported for offences.
