"A Black Girl and Her Braids" is currently streaming on all major platforms! (https://bit.ly/3PukNct) There is a special feeling that comes over me whenever I get my braids freshly done. I love to see Black girls of all ages in their braids so I wanted to do a poetry video that would capture some of that beauty. Shoutout to all the beautiful Black women, and some of their babies, who shared their pics/vids with me. Unfortunately, there are still places in this country where Black women are discriminated against for how they style their hair. Salute to State Senator Holly J. Mitchell, Adjoa B. Asamoah, Esi Eggleston Bracey, and Kelli Richardson Lawson, along with Dove, The National Urban League, Western Center on Law & Poverty, and Color Of Change for creating The CROWN Act! CROWN: Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair. The act was created in 2019 to ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles by extending statutory protection to hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools. To date, 14 states (CA, NY, NJ, VA, CO, WA, MD, CT, NM, DE, NE, NV, OR, IL) and 31 municipalities have signed the CROWN Act or legislation inspired by the CROWN Act.
