It speaks to us of the world’s rift, of the abandonment of this earth in a great sleep. At once vehement and resigned, it simply tells us of our fleeting yet immense destiny. This burden of mortality within us, the peace of forests and of gentle voices, is restored here—even if both song and singer have disappeared from the world. The symphony seems suspended in the night, at its darkest, at its most silent moment of passage to the beyond. It appears to be of a pallid whiteness, crafted with the loving patience and bitterness of lost things: time has been fulfilled, and the belief in a final harmony has long vanished. In this symphony, love no longer speaks—it shivers at the threshold. One could almost call it 'What My Shadow Tells Me,' paraphrasing the indications from the Third Symphony. Indeed, Mahler seems to be listening to what his shadow whispers as the days fall away. Despite the tragic and poignant nature of the music, this symphony remains an illumination through its rifts, and no sound is fractured—even if the composer’s voice occasionally breaks. And the funeral song becomes a veiled lullaby from the beyond. Mahler is already in another light, though he has not forgotten the old light of his past life. His farewell becomes a rite of passage, and with his soul still vibrant, he sets out for other shores, leaving behind a world 'where days are weary of being days, and evenings old of being evenings.' (Milosz). A great, drowning sleep seems to conclude this work. Mahler’s Ninth is both the song of an extreme past and the open door to the light of death—but with the conviction that this sorrowful yet beautiful world left behind will be reborn tomorrow, though without us."
