Diving Ikkafjord, Greenland, June 2024

Diving Expedition to Ikkafjord, Greenland, June 18th to 28th 2024. Elleven participants, six divers and five scientists, biologists and geologists, from Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the UK, made their way to the Ikkafjord in Southern Greenland in order to gather updated information on the condition of the amazing Ikka columns. There seemed to have been a degradation and decay of the columns in later years, most likely due to the warming of seawater. The columns will desintegrate and fall apart with water temperatures over six degrees Celsius, due to the Ikaite (named after the fiord, the scientific name being Calcium Carbonate Hexahydrate) not being stable above this temperature, but we found that storms and fresh, cold seawater, which gave us stunning visibility, had stabilized the columns and they looked just as stunning and fresh, with plenty of marine life and plants, as in 1993/95, when I was diving the columns on the very first expedition. This film is filmed around the columns in the middle of the fiord, where visibility is great. The much larger columns are standing further to the end of the Ikkafjord, but here visibility is not as good. Another 360 VR film will be uploaded later. The two German divers.
