European Commission Midday Press Briefing - 24 February 2026 (Brussels). The briefing opens with remarks marking four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, paying tribute to Ukrainians’ resilience and reiterating the EU’s continued support. In the Q&A, spokespersons address questions on EU backing for Ukraine, including the status of commitments discussed at EU level and how the EU is approaching discussions around immobilised Russian assets. Journalists also raise the issue of Hungary’s use of veto power and whether EU decision-making rules (including unanimity in certain areas) remain fit for purpose. The Commission explains it continues to work within the Treaties and focuses on building support among all Member States. Other topics include: • Single Market: update on the call for evidence and the upcoming public consultation on Territorial Supply Constraints. • Competition: a question on market consolidation in airport baggage-handling systems (Vanderlande / Siemens Logistics), with the Commission indicating it will check and revert. • External relations: EU assessment of Bangladesh’s recent elections and expectations for reforms, including reference to the EU election observation mission. • Trade: questions on new US customs tariffs entering into force and the EU’s request for clarification on how the existing EU-US understanding (including coverage of pharmaceuticals) applies in practice. • Institutional matters: the Commission recalls its 23 December statement on a US decision seen as affecting EU institutional independence, and comments on the College decision to provide support to former Commissioner Thierry Breton in line with established practice.
