When the Rwandan genocide ended in 1994, the tragedy didn’t stop — it spilled across the border into Zaire, igniting a war that would topple Africa’s longest-ruling dictator and reshape the heart of the continent. This episode uncovers the deep historical roots behind the First Congo War — from the tribal and ethnic structure of Congo, the brutal legacy of King Leopold II, and Belgium’s colonial exploitation, to the Cold War intrigues that propped up Mobutu Sese Seko’s 32-year rule. We trace the events that began with independence in 1960, the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the CIA and Belgian interference, and the fractured alliances between Lumumba, Kasa-Vubu, Mobutu, and Tshombe — all leading to a fragile nation on the brink. By the mid-1990s, the refugee crisis following the Rwandan genocide turned eastern Congo into a powder keg. As Rwanda and Uganda invaded under the banner of liberation, Laurent-Désiré Kabila rose as the unlikely figurehead of a rebellion that would end Mobutu’s reign and change the name of Zaire forever. But the victory was short-lived — beneath the surface, the seeds of a far deadlier war were already taking root.
