This animation requires the use of red cyan glasses for 3D stereo effect. Cochlear implant surgeons are challenged with the need to visualize the cochlea through the facial recess. The apex of the cochlea can be seen beneath the mid-belly of the tensor tympani muscle. The level of the apex can be predicted by the plane of the stapes footplate. The round window can be seen in association with all pertinent related structures: the hook region of the cochlear duct, the modiolus, the osseous spiral lamina, the cochlear aqueduct and the anterior cochlear vein. The facial recess and cochlea dimensions are shown relative to 1, 1.5 and 2mm burrs. The digital model used to create this demonstration is the "3-D model of the Human Temporal Bone". The model was made under the supervision of Drs. M. Charles Liberman and Saumil Merchant by Haobing Wang and Clarinda Northrop. Model development was supported by a core grant from the NIDCD (P30 DC05209). The model can be downloaded from the website of the Eaton–Peabody Lab. Production of this movie was made with permission by Michael Teixido MD in Delaware supported by NIH Grant Number 2 P20 RR016472-04 under the INBRE Program of the National Center for Research Resources.
