More videos from me: / @andreaspetersen1 tldr: Small cars are vanishing, even though they make the most sense in our increasingly dense and pedestrian-friendly cities. Models like the Polo or Yaris have grown so much they’re no longer truly small—meanwhile, the real city cars like the Smart, Twizy, or Up! are becoming rare. Cities haven’t changed much in size since the 20th century, but cars have ballooned in every dimension, making everyday tasks like parking an SUV a frustrating ordeal. Despite automakers insisting otherwise, demand for small cars hasn’t gone away—used ones hold their value because they’re cheap to run and easy to live with. The problem lies in regulation, profit margins, and marketing: modern safety standards require costly tech that bloats small cars and makes them less profitable to build, while larger vehicles bring in more money and sell better as aspirational lifestyle products. Consumers see size as status and safety, even in cities where bulk works against them. As governments encourage alternatives to car travel, the logic for small cars only strengthens—yet manufacturers chase high-margin electric trucks and SUVs instead, subsidized and branded as eco-luxury. All while many people just want something like an old A2—compact, simple, and good enough.
