Royal Air Force Upwood abandoned military base. RAF Upwood is a former airfield built in 1917 and was used in the second world war, it was one of 70 bases in the east of England. It housed over 2000 crew men and staff and also civilians including children who went to school on the base, it was latter handed over to the bombing campaign. It is now sadly due to be raised to the ground and sold to developers 25 years after it closed. RAF Upwood, near Ramsey UK, was shut by the Ministry of Defence in 1994, but attempts to develop the land failed to take off. The airbase has played host to both British and American services and was once the set of a 1953 Hollywood movie. The married quarters of the base have been sold off and I believe are housing, and the four hangers are being used by engineering firms. RAF Upwood is also home to a glider club and there are plans for the former guard house to be converted into a village community centre and has recently been cleared and evaluated. Royal Air Force Upwood is a fascinating piece of history and a wonderful place to explore. The majority of the base due to be demolished, has been used by graffiti artists, photographers and film makers, even air soft and fpv drone pilots, I don't think any of us want to see the place go. music by Tommymutiu from pixabay
