The thing is to execute turns where there is the most energy and verticality. The cut back is a manoeuvre that repositions you back into that powerful section. It is about getting back to where the wave breaks, to find where there is the most energy to ride. This is a difficult manoeuvre because the steps are hard to link. 1-The approach As soon as the bottom turn starts, you need to direct your board on the shoulder of the wave. That is why you must execute your bottom turn with a long, smooth, progressive transfer of weight. The surfer must place himself on the highest spot of the shoulder of the wave, so that he has plenty of space to execute that first carve in the most possible curvy way, and to keep his speed. He has his board is on its rail, his legs are bent, and the alignment of his upper body and lower body gives the impression of a strong pressure on the board. It reminds us of the first phase of the bottom turn. 2- The transition phase: the surfer is now facing the heart of the wave in an upward movement. He simultaneously rotates his upper body and puts pressure on the rear of his board. This explosive energy contrasts with the first static phase of the manoeuvre and it is the starting point of the riding up to the breaking spot. 3- The re-entry: the surfer executes a carve on the top of the wave: either on the vertical axis of the board, or by closely following the curve of the wave - the foam, when the breaking of the wave is less hollow, thus using the longitudinal axis of the board. To sum up, there are 3 phases for the cut back: the first carve on the shoulder of the wave, the active riding up with the pressure on the rear foot, and finally the re-entry to start again and follow the wave.
