Fake barcodes can be a real problem for retailers. According to police, Maria Gentry of Asheville, printed her own barcodes at home and attached them to products inside the Target at the River Hills Road location. The items were scanned at a cheaper price, which also buys her a lot of legal trouble. Gentry's charged with five counts of larceny and four counts of obtaining property by false pretense. APD says she used the home-generated barcodes to buy breast pumps and a baby carrier. Many customers at that same Target are miffed. "It's still illegal. It's essentially walking in and stealing it," one woman tells us. Another customer feels compassion for the mother. "It's sad but obviously the person was in need. Sometimes people do unfortunate things they shouldn't be doing," she tells us. "There are a lot of savvy criminals right now who love to rip off retailers," says National Retail Federation spokesperson Kathy Grannis, who spoke to us via Facetime. She says fraudulent barcodes cost stores $30 billion a year. Grannis tells us black market printers are available that allow criminals to duplicate barcodes. There are also barcode generators on the internet. "One of the biggest issues is that technology continues to evolve right along with these criminals bad intentions," Grannis explains. "So they are finding ways to get around even the best laid plans." _______________ Follow WLOS on social media: WLOS ABC 13 News on Facebook: / news13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Twitter: / wlos_13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Instagram: / wlos_13 Subscribe to WLOS on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ABC13Cha...
