Our quest for a powerful yet energy-efficient server led us to a fascinating experiment: building a 90-terabyte Unraid server that idles at around 25 watts. When comparing HDDs vs. SSDs, SSDs consumed slightly less total system power (17-19W vs. 22W with spun-down HDDs), but HDDs gained an edge by fully powering down when inactive and allowing for much more storage capacity than SSDs.
