High school chemistry class was not my shining moment but since then I’ve discovered that science transforms a dirty liquid called crude oil into many useful products we use every day. Most of this work is done by a refinery and I’d like to give you a visual tour of what a refinery does and how it makes dirty oil into jet fuel so let’s go. CORRECTIONS and CLARIFICATIONS Rich Dobbs pointed out that not everything gets vaporized in the crude oil coming in. Although the principle of vaporization holds true, the bottom category of product that results in asphalt doesn't need to be vaporized if everything above it is boiled off and vaporized. Mr Kim rightly identified that there are other secondary columns that further separate product coming out of the initial crude column that I describe. The coker process is actually tied to a secondary column rather than the initial one. He also points out that the secondary processing of the heaviest product is vacuum based rather than the heat based process I describe.
