Perched high above the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, stands a Gothic Revival castle — not haunted by ghosts, but by an enduring legacy of ambition, wealth, and transformation. This is Lyndhurst—a place where American history, architecture, and myth intertwine beneath pointed arches and ivy-covered stone. Its story begins in 1838 with William Paulding Jr., a former mayor of New York City. Paulding envisioned a peaceful summer retreat, a sanctuary from the noise of urban life. To bring this dream to life, he enlisted one of the most celebrated architects of the time—Alexander Jackson Davis. Davis didn’t just design the home’s dramatic Gothic silhouette. He shaped every detail, from the custom furniture to the original 184-acre landscape, completing the estate in 1842. But peace gave way to opulence in 1864, when George Merritt, a wealthy New York merchant, purchased the estate. Merritt had no interest in quaint or modest. He brought Davis back and commissioned him to double the size of the home, transforming it into the imposing mansion we see today—more fortress than villa. In 1880, Jay Gould, one of the Gilded Age’s most reviled tycoons, acquired the property. A Wall Street titan synonymous with cutthroat ambition and scandal, Gould wasn’t drawn to the estate for beauty or nostalgia. He sought escape. Lyndhurst became his sanctuary—a fortified retreat from the public eye, a buffer from the very world he helped shape. It was Gould who renamed it from Lydenhurst to Lyndhurst, claiming it as his own. But time has a way of softening legacies. After Gould’s death, the estate—long steeped in shadows—began to evolve. From a symbol of power and seclusion, it transformed into a beacon of history, preservation, and unexpected generosity. With its looming turrets, sweeping lawns, and panoramic view of the Hudson, Hollywood soon came calling. Directors and cinematographers, drawn to its haunting beauty, made Lyndhurst a silent co-star.
