#RoboticJointCenter | https://www.stoneclinic.com/robotic-j... Kevin R. Stone, MD is biased toward replacing injured knee tissues biologically as part of a BioKnee reconstruction. But for those patients with true bone-on-bone, worn-out knees, The Stone Clinic helps return athletes to sports with robotically-assisted knee replacements. Dr. Stone performs robotic knee replacements using the Stryker MAKO Robotic-Arm Assisted Orthopaedic System. In an outpatient procedure, the MAKO robotic arm—programmed to follow a computerized 3-D model of the patient’s knee—is guided by Dr. Stone to remove only the damaged tissue from the joint and insert the implants with exquisite, consistently reproducible precision. This minimally invasive technique gives the patient a strong, natural-feeling knee that provides rapid pain relief and a full return to an active lifestyle (including impact sports like running). • Call The Stone Clinic at +1 (415) 563-3110 for an appointment • Complimentary Virtual/Phone Consultations available for patients outside the San Francisco Bay Area at https://www.stoneclinic.com/consult You may learn more about The Stone Clinic's robotically-assisted knee replacement program and other treatment information at: https://www.stoneclinic.com/robotic-j... https://www.stoneclinic.com/blog/why-... Hear from patients who've undergone our robotic knee replacement at: https://www.stoneclinic.com/patient-s... or #RoboticJointCenterPatientStory #RunningAfterKneeReplacement ---------------- TRANSCRIPT: The most common question I get from patients is, "Hey doc, if I have a partial replacement, can I return to full sports?" And in fact, we have patients now running triathlons and marathons climbing mountains, skiing a hundred days a year on their replaced parts inside their knee. And so my opinion is that given current new techniques using robotic accuracy, eliminating cement for the total knees, patients can return to full sports as long as they do their fitness and rehab program and follow our advice. So for the patient who needs a knee replacement, our approach is the following. Number one. We want to do a full assessment of their knee, both with our physical therapy team, our x-rays MRI and physical exam, and understand that patient's mechanics and understand how to help them the most. If we're going to go on and do a full resurfacing, our approach is the following. First, we do a CT scan and build a 3d model of the knee joint that patient's own knee joint. And then we can place the components on the computer before ever touching the patient. And then at surgery, use a MAKO Robot to accurately reproduce the exact positioning of the components for the patient's knee. This permits us to use porous or uncemented knee components that the body can grow into. I'll show you. This here is a femoral component for our resurfacing and the undersurface of this femoral component has porous metal. And by using a robot, our cuts can be so precise that the femur can fit into this component with a perfect fit and the body can grow into the porous under surface. By eliminating the cement, our patients then feel confident that they can return to running and high-impact sports and skiing because they're not going to knock this component that has grown into their bone loose. This is one of the ways in which we treat athletic patients and help them get back to full sports. Despite having very severely arthritic knees.
