The October 22 Thornton Township Board meeting never officially convened or adjourned, yet controversy marked the proceedings. The meeting was scheduled for 6 p.m., and members of the public waited more than 30 minutes in the upstairs board room and the downstairs meeting area. Supervisor Henyard eventually announced there was no quorum, though the roll was never called and three board members were present. Trustee Darlene Gray Everett was in the upstairs board room with Henyard. Trustee Chris Gonzalez had notified Clerk Loretta Wells that he was in the downstairs meeting area along with several residents. Chronicle reporter Eric Crump spoke with Gonzalez after Supervisor Henyard announced the meeting would be cancelled, and that interview is included at the end of this video. 0:00 - Introduction — Melanie explains that she did not shoot this video, and she thanks Eric Crump of the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle for stepping in 2:39 - In the upstairs board room, 7:39 - "It's embarrassing," says resident Mary Avant 8:12 - Trustee Chris Gonzalez cites safety concerns and accommodating residents as reasons for holding meetings in the large room The Lansing Journal will be launching a campaign soon in order to raise the support needed to hire additional staff who can share the editorial burden that Melanie is currently bearing alone.
