Half Mattress stitch (also known as Half stitch weave)

Using your garment yarn or a firmly-spun seaming yarn (such as sock yarn) in a similar colour, measure out a long tail, at least one and a half times the length of your seam. Thread it onto a blunt tapestry needle, and lay knitted pieces out so that right sides are facing you and the selvedge edges are right next to each other. Leaving enough tail to weave in later, bring tapestry needle from back to front in the middle of the first selvedge stitch on the right-hand piece, then repeat the same movement on the left-hand piece. Continue repeating the following 2 steps until hem edges have been sewn together: 1. Bring the tapestry needle under and up through the strand of yarn in the centre of the selvedge stitch of the next row on the right-hand piece. 2. Bring tapestry needle under and up through the strand of yarn in the centre of the selvedge stitch of the the next row on the left-hand piece. (Note: because of the structure of selvedge stitch, on one row you will grab the bump formed by the twisted stitch, and then on the following row you will grab the head of the stitch). As you work, pull the yarn gently every inch or so to tighten up your seam stitches. Note: blocking will smooth out the stitches along seaming. Continue with Mattress stitch throughout the side and sleeve edges until the top of the cuff.
