Paul Ermigiotti and Mark Varien present a webinar on one of the Crow Canyons longest running and most important projects (2008-2020): The Pueblo Farming Project (PFP). The PFP began when Crow Canyon archaeologists asked our Pueblo colleagues a simple question: “What topic would you like to see us study with our research?” They answered without hesitation: “Corn farming.” Together, traditional Pueblo farmers and Crow Canyon staff designed the PFP. Experimental gardening became the focal point of the PFP. Pueblo farmers provided the seed and the farming expertise, and they worked with Crow Canyon researchers and educators to plant and harvest small fields and measure how annual weather affected yields. Central to the PFP were the goals of our Native partners. At the request of the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office, the PFP conducted DNA analyses to document the genetics of Hopi corn. The project documented the incredible diversity of Hopi corn today. The PFP also addressed educational goals by developing standards-aligned curriculum for middle school students, a documentary film, and an eBook that presents the results of the project, all available at https://pfp.crowcanyon.org. The PFP exemplifies the mission and vision of the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center: work with our Native colleagues to conduct long-term research, develop that research into new education programs, and address the needs of Native communities. Join Paul and Mark to learn about this exciting project!
