Ajloun Castle is a 12th Century fortress that was built under the rule of the military leader Saladin in the north of Jordan near Irbid, the second largest city in Jordan. The castle is located 1250 meters above sea level and offers visitors a breathtaking view of the Jordan Valley and the surrounding desert. Built in 1184 and 1185 by General Izz ad-Din Usama, a nephew of Saladin, the fortress served as a defense against the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem and was mainly intended to facilitate the transmission of messages. To this end, Saladin had a chain of forts built that relayed messages by fire and pigeon mail. Izz ad-Din Aibak expanded the fortress from 1214 to 1215. In 1260, the Mongols briefly conquered the castle. It was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1837. In the years 1927 to 1929 major restoration works were carried out on the castle. Due to its location in the forested region, it became a popular destination for Jordanians. Most tourists also stop at the castle. In one of the halls it houses a small museum with artefacts from the region.
