Pigeon Island National park in Saint Lucia is an islet located in Gros Islet, facing Rodney bay, in the northern region of Saint Lucia. In 1778, Admiral George Rodney took over Pigeon island, expelled the natives, and built a fort on the smaller of the two peaks. This fort is known as Fort Rodney. To establish clear viewpoints, Rodney ordered all trees on Pigeon Island to be cut down. Composed of two peaks, peaking at 359 feet, the island is a historic site with numerous forts such as an 18th-century British fort and Fort Rodney both used by the British to spy on French Ships from neighbouring Martinique. In 1782, Admiral Rodney sailed from Pigeon Island to confront the French fleet, which he defeated in the Battle of Saints. In 1979 it was named a national park. Views from the top are well worth the 20-minute hike. Visitors can explore the remains of the fort which includes views from the walls and some authentic rusting cannons. Paths wind around the remains of the batteries and garrisons which are like an old ghost town. Some of the surviving buildings include the thick stone walls of the former Officer’s Kitchen. There are a couple of local restaurants serving food in this wonderful location. The Jambe de Bois restaurant is in a waterfront position with unrivalled sea views and serves good food throughout the day at reasonable prices. Pigeon Island is also the home for Saint Lucia’s jazz festival. Every year in mid-May, this scenic spot becomes one of the most vibrant party in all of the Caribbean. For over 20 years it has featured music greats like Herbie Hancock, Kenny G, Air Supply, Patty LaBelle, Jimmy Cliff and Diana Ross.
