For information on Rich Osthoff's Signature Flies and Guided Trips visit: https://www.richosthoff.com/ For the past few summers, I've been returning from Western trips late in the Driftless season. Last October, I was welcomed by low water and heavy aquatic vegetation from strong summer rains. Terrestrials like Rich's Splat Cricket seemed the most practical way to fish parched and congested streams like this one. Especially when fish were so timid. Streamers were working, but I was spooking fish, picking up weeds, and hanging up too often for my liking. Similarly, droppers were off the menu, as the stream was too shallow on average. More heavily hackled, large-winged terrestrial patterns might have been an option -- they offer great visibility and loft -- but they compromise on profile and castability. On water of this scale, we're just after a solid smack and a short drift: I'm not worried about losing sight of my fly. Different water may have fished completely differently that day, but this was what worked for me. Besides, sticking to a pattern and exploring headwaters is my favorite way to wrap up the Wisconsin fishing season.
